Abstract:

Letters, articles, notes, and correspondence relating to noted anthropologist Alfred Kroeber, his wife Theodora, and son Karl, from a former graduate student of his at the University of California, Berkeley. Three small handwritten notes (3 p.) on University of California, Department of Anthropology letterhead stationery stamped "A.L. Kroeber, 1325 Arch Street, Berkeley 8, California" are signed "Alfred" (dated 1951 and 1957), one handwritten letter (2 p.) is from Theodora (dated Feb. 6, 1961), and a typewritten letter (1 p.) on Columbia University letterhead stationery signed by Karl Kroeber (dated Dec. 6, 1999). Includes pages 3-6 from Anthropology News (Oct. 1999), containing a letter from Ursula K. Le Guin and an article by George M. Foster. Both pieces rebutt a previous article in the same publication called "Assuming Responsibility for Ishi" (May 1999). Also includes a 17 x 12 cm photomechanical print of Alfred Kroeber [age 45?], photocopies of newspaper articles about Ishi, and a movie portrayal of Kroeber and Ishi played by Jon Voight and Graham Greene (in "The Last of His Tribe," 1992), photocopy of correspondence from Hanks to the Berkeley Department of Anthropology on her memories of Phoebe Hearst, and a photocopy of Hanks's personal recollection of the longshoreman's strike in 1934 and her experience asking the carpenter's union for help to defend a teacher being fired in Eureka, and observations on John Steinbeck padlocking a San Francisco theater. Also includes Hanks' notes about Kroeber made in preparation for a commemorative lecture she gave at the State University of New York, Albany, upon his death.
